Egret at Tom's Cove

This was painted last September at Chincotegue NWR. I was participating in an annual painting event there. I had allready finished 4 small paintings over over 2 days and was ready to call it quits but thought I would try this little one. I was pleased with it.

Surf with sandpiper

Last October I got up at dawn to paint this scene at Assateuague National Seashore.

I used a 9x12 board, divided into 3 sections. I started at the top at 6am looking straight out to sea, the middle scene about 7:30 looking slightly north and the bottom at 10 facing south. They were all done from the same spot on the beach.. It was a good morning.

Chincoteague, NWR

This is m y first posting in a while. I did this in late April, about 2 weeks ago. I have another version, slightly larger that I will be posting soon and offering for sale. What is missing from this image is all the birds that were wading, flying and floating around the scene.

Sunrise on the Chesapeake, February 7, 2008

There is a lot of earth color in this sky and water scene.

Working from photos is very diferent than working from life, this is from a photo. I do a lot of plen air but I think it is important for me to understand how to work from photos too. This has a lot of sharp edges but softer ones too. It is either bold or garish. Maybe bold, bordering on garish. Compare to my posting from a few days ago of another sunrise. That one was done in Plen air,

the light conditions were different-not as much contrast-so it should have a softer look than todays positng. Even if we take that into consideration; the 2 paintings are remarkably different.

Chesapeake Winter Sunrise

This was done on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, facing east at about 8 a.m. on February 5. When the morning sky has some broken clouds you get beautiful sunrises on the Bay, especially in winter when the light is clear.
